How Do I Know I Need Animal Damage Restoration?
The next question you may have is, how would you know that you need animal damage restoration? Well, let us talk about some of the signs of animal damage. The first and most obvious sign is if you hear skittering in your attic or on the roof. That is the sound of an animal running across the flooring. Other signs include squeaking, growls, and purrs throughout the day and at night. Different animals make different sounds, so as long as you hear the noise, you should begin to address the problem.
You may also notice tears in ducts or disturbed insulation. Perhaps you will see nests on the roof, in the chimney, or in the attic. These last couple of signs are harder to notice, so you must be more aware of them. If you notice any of the aforementioned signs, then there is a high likelihood that you have rodents or other animals in your attic.
These cute critters wreak havoc in your space. It’s unlikely that squirrels and raccoons will nest in attics during the extreme summer heat. However, during autumn, winter, and spring, they like the warmth and protection of the attic space. Unfortunately, they pretty much take control of the space, compressing and displacing insulation, compromising the R-Values. In addition, these critters create latrine areas that further damage and contaminate the space.

Biological Hazards Under Your Roof?
“fantastic job”
“Peterson Energy did a fantastic job on our new home!! Paul and Mindy are great to deal with. Very reliable and professional. I would recommend them to anyone.“
Gary C.
There are a lot of biological hazards that are very dangerous for you and your family. Let’s first consider raccoons. Raccoon feces are of particular concern because raccoon feces contain certain organisms that can cause serious health issues for humans, such as blindness and death. Specific organisms that are commonly found in raccoon feces include rabies and leptospirosis. Slightly less commonly found are salmonella, fungus, and E. coli.
However, we can’t just blame raccoon feces for these diseases. When these animals enter our homes, they can carry fleas, ticks, and other parasites on their fur that they can spread when they rummage through the insulation of your attic and rub up against walls and things. These animals are very cute from afar, but it’s also a reality that they are dangerous biological hazards living and sharing space under your roof.
Why Can’t I Do This Myself?
Once you figure out that you have animals in your attic, your next step is to get rid of them! For many of us, our first thought is that we can get rid of the animals ourselves. However, we strongly recommend against that. For one, animals are dangerous to deal with. They may be rabid or have other communicable diseases. They also may become defensive or aggressive, which can be harmful to you, especially if they feel trapped or threatened. The easiest solution may seem like simply leaving the windows and doors open to let the animals escape, but then you risk other animals entering the house.
You should also be mindful of insulation that has been ripped up that needs to be handled carefully. Furthermore, the animals have likely damaged the roof, which means that you need great construction skills and the ability to get it back into working shape. It is also very important to know what a working shape even looks like in an attic.
Additionally, it will be harder for you to figure out where these animals are coming from. They tend to find areas of rotting wood or holes in the insulation to sneak in through. If you decide to tackle getting rid of the animals themselves, make sure you do a thorough search of where these animals could have come in from. That rotted wood or hole will need to be sealed.

Animal Damage Restoration Restores Your Insulation’s Functional Capabilities
“paul knows his stuff”
“We had Peterson Energy Consultants upgrade the insulation in our attic and main floor walls. They did a wonderful job, were very professional, and reasonably priced. Paul knows his stuff when it comes to insulation. I highly recommend them.”
Mark K.
Another reason to prioritize fixing your insulation after discovering animal damage is to maintain your insulation’s functional abilities. In St. Louis, where the climate is relatively cold, warm (lighter) air rises from the home and leaves the home through the attic. From here, outside air enters the house to equalize. This outside air messes with your home’s ecosystem through this air leakage. We want to prevent this air from leaking out again, so we will do our best to fix the insulation.
By fixing the insulation, we can keep the house comfortable, keeping the temperature at the regulated temperature you have set your thermostat to. Furthermore, you will be able to lower energy bills, as the ventilation system won’t have to work as hard to keep the temperature stable. Energy Star estimates that you can save up to 15% of your energy costs by fixing the insulation in your home. Keeping your house comfortable and decreasing your energy bill are paramount to your family’s well-being!

Animal Damage Restoration Stops Water Damage
While animals may enter your attic through rotted wood or holes in the insulation, animals can also create more holes in the roof, or they can ruin ductwork. They can also damage important parts of the roof ventilation system, like the soffits. All of these factors contribute to water infiltration in your home, which is very dangerous and expensive. Water damage is one of the most expensive things to fix in a home, so it is important that you prevent water damage at all costs.
Even something as simple as fixing small damages to your insulation can prevent significantly larger projects from dealing with water damage, which includes issues with the foundation and more rotted wood. Water damage can also lead to mold or rust, dangerous electrical issues, and more. We want to work with you to prevent this from happening to you and your family!
